music for falling/flying was written as a companion work to 'The Well', a short story written by author Ben Loory who is a dear friend and with whom I have collaborated quite a bit. In my work, I tried to musically depict the ever present sense of longing found throughout the story with space; musical moments never being completely realized. This space is never fully empty (save for a few moments), as echoes of what was linger like a chill. Hope is present however, and manifests as a song, initially presented by the clarinet. Without this hope there is nothing to long for and Ben's text illustrates this desire so potently. Hope can vary for each person, and as the work progresses, versions of this hope rise to the surface. These could be rampant repetitions of the same fixation repeating over and over, or completely fantastic occurrences. Ultimately, the space between, the longing, does slowly overcome. Though, sometimes getting lost in the hope is the best we can do.
